When asking a former employer, teacher, or friend to write a reference letter for you is not something that should be taken lightly. Usually, if you are requesting a reference you are applying for something that could affect your life, and thus it should be taken seriously. Letters of recommendation from employers may contain some or all of the following: * Previous positions held in the company * Summary of job responsibilities * Strengths, skills, and talents * Initiative, dedication, integrity, reliability, etc. * Ability to work with a team * Ability to work independently Emphasize key points that you want the reader to note on the applicant's resume or job application. Be sure to meaningfully elaborate, don't simply restate. Give specific examples to back up what you have said about the person's qualifications and character. The person making the recommendation also needs to be familiar with the applicant's skills, capabilities, experience, contributions and performance, with specific examples to which he or she can refer, where possible. Good sample reference letters will also ask you to extend yourself for further discussion about the person in question. This means giving your telephone number or e-mail address. If you really feel the person is worthy of your time, make sure you're available to answer questions a potential employer might have. Learning how to write a letter of reference is not that difficult. It doesn't even have to be wordy or long. You only need to explain how the person is related or known to you. You also need to put down how long you have known the person. This would determine how well you know the person. A letter of recommendation for someone you have known only known for two days is not really credible. Here are some quick tips to help you write a reference or recommendation letter for a friend, co-worker or employee. * Stay positive, honest and personal. Use personal stories or observations about your work experiences with the job seeker. * Be objective. Provide the facts and substantiate them. Keep to what you know about the person. Do not generalize or base your statements on your opinions or those of others. * Describe how you came to know the persont. Explain briefly your history with the them, and in what capacity you have been affiliated with the subject.
